Kanashimi draws from the painterly makeup in Shunshō's 1771 portrait of Ichikawa Danjūrō IV. Wave-like lines cover the actor's face, mirrored in the mask's surface. Green tones and downturned mouth unite print and sculpture in melancholic expression.
